Cleveland - A one-year suspension for Browns receiver Donte Stallworth?
The NFL got it right, and not just because it's the penalty that I suggested in a June 18, 2009 story.
Think about the situation: Stallworth not only was legally drunk (.128) when he was driving and killed a man crossing the street, but he also had used marijuana. He already was in the NFL's substance abuse program because of past drug problems.
Then read this part of commissioner Roger Goodell's letter to the Browns receiver:
As you recognize, this conduct and the loss of life has caused serious damage to the NFL and NFL players generally. Legal arguments that focus on criminal liability under Florida law do not diminish that damage or your responsibility for your conduct.
