Talks At Impasse, NBA Locks Out Referees

The N.B.A. locked out its referees on Friday, virtually ensuring that the league will use replacement officials when it opens the preseason in two weeks.

Dozens of nonunion referees, most of them from the W.N.B.A. and the N.B.A.’s Development League, will attend training camp in New York next week. Barring a breakthrough in negotiations, three of those referees will be on the court in Utah on Oct. 1. It would be the first time since 1995 that the league has used replacement referees.
