referees should be accustomed to this by now. No one likes them. Few outside their immediate family understand the demands on their time and the toll on their bodies. And no one empathizes when they blow a call that costs a game, or in some instances, a chance at a championship.

In an informal poll offans (conducted by me), referees are only slightly more popular than morticians, and only because when you disagree with an official, you're around to express your frustration.
No, they remain the necessary evil, everyone's favorite target. It is more than a little unfortunate – at times even unseemly – since most of them are terrific people and consummate professionals. And compassionate and intelligent, too.
