Bob DuPuy, baseball's top money man, was in a jovial mood Wednesday night. Yankee Stadium was packed for Game 2 of a World Series that's showing early signs of a classic--one that could provide a nice bounce at the curtain to a season otherwise jolted by recession.

But it wasn't just the Phillies-Yankees showdown that put a smile on his face. With the season just about over, DuPuy, Major League Baseball's chief operating officer, has seen the league survive its toughest economic season in years--one that brought a 7% drop in attendance along with a falloff in sponsorship renewals.
