Rooney's Ankle Causes World Cup Nightmares

If there were any doubts remaining that the hopes of an entire nation’s sporting summer is pinned on the health of one man they were dispelled in one stomach-turning moment last night when Wayne Rooney took centre stage in a scene so disturbing it should have carried a health warning.

Like leaning over the edge of a tall building or watching from a helpless distance as a toddler runs mindlessly towards the top of an unguarded stairwell, the sight of Rooney pulling up in obvious pain in the dying moments of Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich sent shivers of helpless terror through every England fan.

Stephen King could spend the rest of his life trying to emulate such horror without success.
