Can't say exactly why, but not in some 64 Masters have I had the feeling of one as open as this would seem to be, starting Thursday.
Part of that, of course, is the Tiger Woods enigma of inactivity and domestic scrimmages. But the far bigger part is that no one else has hamstrung the game so far this year in any fashion remotely approaching the long-gone way Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus hoisted the game into the financial stratosphere. With those stalwarts cocked and ready, you knew coming down Washington Road you would be dodging shot and shell, and heaven knows what else.
And, it shouldn't have to be said again, Tiger Woods.
This is not the same.
Not at all.
