Probe Shows Pro Leagues Must Corral Agents

Monday's news that Florida and the NCAA are probing an alleged payment of $100,000 to center Maurkice Pouncey - a first-round draft pick of the Steelers in April's draft - by the representative of a sports agent is as much an acknowledgement of the path taken by athletes to professional sports as well as the business practices of those who are attempting to represent them.

Player representatives have become a noticeable, but unwelcome, guest at the NCAA table. They have developed relationships with prospects by funding travel teams and surrounding them with runners who extol an agent's virtues and monitor their every move on campus, and by loansharking extra benefits to kids who believe this is the norm.
