Berkman Goes Full Circle With Astros

As the Astros prepared for the 1997 draft, general manager Gerry Hunsicker peppered his staff with questions about Lance Berkman.

“So you’re telling me there’s no way he falls to us?” he said.

No way, he was told.

“Are you sure?” he said. “I love this guy.”

Nope.

“When our first-round pick came up, and he was still on the board,” Hunsicker said, “it was a happy room.”

From that happy beginning, Berkman became one of the best pro athletes this city has had, and his likely trade to the Yankees will close another chapter as a franchise in disrepair begins a necessary rebuilding project.
