The power dynamics in this relationship are all over the place. A coach in cricket or rugby is the boss, the guy who hires and fires. In tennis, he is supposed to be the guide and mentor, yet his eager student can be rid of him in an instant. The player, after all, is the one who makes the money.

During McEnroe’s experiment with coaching, he was amazed to find that his advice went unheeded, no matter how much he charged for it.
