The US Airways A320 jetliner carrying the Oregon State football team landed on the tarmac at San Jose International Airport at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Coach Mike Riley sat in first class, wearing a gray suit, sweater and tie. His assistants and players flipped on their cell telephones, sent text messages and made calls, and someone in the front of the plane announced: "Arizona just took a 7-0 lead on Oregon."
This was followed by silence.
The Beavers play Stanford today. It will mark the fourth time this season that OSU faces a top 10 opponent. But it's next week's Civil War against No. 1 Oregon that feels like the defining moment of the Beavers season. It will decide everything.
Beat the in-state rivals and save the Beavers season....
