Fifa’s controversial process of picking World Cup hosts must never be repeated. No more secret ballots, please, no more collusion and no more double bids. For all his faults, Sepp Blatter does love the game and Fifa’s president must close down this tacky market of affection-trading.

Football risks losing its primary focus. Fifa should be clearing the deal-makers and documentary-makers out of football’s temple. Blatter and his 22 cohorts gathering here for Thursday’s vote on 2018 and 2022 have taken their eye off the ball.

True football men like Michel Platini and Franz Beckenbauer, who so vividly embodied the game’s most uplifting principles as majestic players, should be taking a stand in their roles as influential contestants in the ExCo...
