Other Sports Envy Baseball's Labor Peace

Sixteen years ago, baseball was in the midst of what seemed to be the most damaging work stoppage in professional sports history. Not only was the 1994 World Series cancelled — the only time since 1904 that it hasn't been played — but the spring training of 1995 opened with replacement players who came from all walks of life wearing big-league uniforms.

"It was painful,'' said commissioner Bud Selig.

The pain, however, provided the gain.

Now look at baseball.

It has become the paragon of professional sports stability.
