The BMW PGA Championship, being contested this week at Wentworth Club in England, is the European Tour's flagship event. Lee Westwood, ranked No. 1 in the world, has made a point recently of calling it golf's "fifth major." That's a pointed reference to the PGA Tour's flagship event, the Players Championship, the tournament most often given that moniker.
Several other Euro Tour members, most notably Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie, have been talking up the BMW PGA, too. They point to the fact that seven of the top nine players in the world, all members of the European Tour, are in the field. The Tour itself is promoting the event as a "World Ranking shoot-out."
