Ongoing Elimination Game for Cal Baseball

Two days into the College World Series, California-Berkeley already finds itself in the losers’ bracket, one loss from elimination.

So what else is new?

This whole season has been one big elimination game for Cal, starting on the September day when the university announced baseball would be one of four varsity sports dropped for 2011-12 because of budget cuts. Baseball supporters raised $9 million to save the program, but the campaign took seven agonizing months and had so many starts and stops that even now, Coach David Esquer has trouble believing the death watch is over.
