UVa's CWS Chances Hinge on Pitching Staff

The bad news is that Virginia is playing in the loser’s bracket tonight against California in an elimination game. The good news is that the Cavaliers have a healthy pitching staff with lots of fresh arms.

Faced with a situation where there’s no tomorrow if they lose, the Cavs are well aware of what looms ahead. Should they get on a hot streak, as South Carolina did last year, and end up fighting their way into the College World Series championship series, the Cavaliers’ pitching staff will have to summon their best stuff.

If Tyler Wilson can beat the Bears tonight, Virginia will collide again with South Carolina on Friday, and if UVa wins, it will meet the Gamecocks again on Saturday for the bracket championship. Should the Cavs survive and advance to meet the champions of the other bracket, then it’s a best-of-three series.

For Virginia’s pitching staff and bullpen, that means probably at least five games in six days.

While that may cause some college coaches to reach for the panic button, that’s not the case with Cavaliers coach Brian O’Connor or his pitching coach Karl Kuhn.
