German Women Favored in World Cup

The FIFA Women's World Cup, which begins Sunday in Germany, will be almost unrecognizable from the first event held 20 years ago.

That tournament, played in China, was essentially a competition between an American team of soon-to-be-famous teenagers such as Mia Hamm and a couple of veteran squads from Scandinavia, the only other place with enough interest in women's team athletics to produce a world-class side.

Relying largely on grit and athleticism, the Americans blitzed their final three opponents 14-3 and became the queens of the game. It wasn't until 1999, when Brandi Chastain famously disrobed after scoring a goal, that most Americans noticed.
