Heat to Play Major Role

Spend five minutes on the driving range at Atlanta Athletic Club and it's easy to see why it's been 10 years since the PGA Championship came to Georgia. By 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon the temperature at the golf course hit a sweltering 96 degrees with 41 percent humidity, the same conditions needed to slow-cook a turkey. A dozen 5-iron shots into his practice session Darren Clarke looked like the Atlanta Fire Department had turned the hoses on him.

The heat, which is forecast to continue through the weekend, could be a big factor in the outcome of this major. Sure, it's not the Ice Bowl or the 1915 Jack Johnson-Jess Willard fight which went 26 rounds outside in Havana in 105-degree heat.
