Midway through the second set tonight and an embarrassingly early exit staring her down, Caroline Wozniacki could have let the questions overtake her. The ones that ask whether she is deserving of the No. 1 ranking despite a lack of a Grand Slam title. The ones that ask that she substantiate her success. Heck, even the ones asking how she deals with her boyfriend Rory McIlroy owning a major trophy and not her.
Instead, Wozniacki hearkened back to the last time she found herself in the same situation. Already down a set and trailing four games to one in the second to Svetlana Kuznetsova, she thought back to two years ago when she fell behind in the same manner.
"It's important to stay positive," Wozniacki said. "If I had been negative I definitely would not have turned the match around. I'm a fighter."
