How Saturday Could Save the Open

Let's not mince words. This year's U.S. Open has been a bit of a clunker.

Players have grouched about scheduling changes, complained about transportation and revolted over court conditions. We've seen 15 mid-match retirements and enough rain to put the most craven corporate freeloaders in a bitter mood.

But the real trouble with the Open so far has been the quality of the tennis. Other than a few sporadic glimpses of greatness (Ferrero and Monfils, Kuznetsova and Wozniacki, Young and Wawrinka), the promising youngsters never broke through and the most-anticipated matchups fizzled. Most of the top-seeded women are long gone.

Fear not, though. The tennis fates are working on it.
