Angels Fall Further Back in West

The loss dropped the Angels three games back of the first-place Rangers who did not play Monday. The Angels have now lost six of seven in Oakland this season and 11 of their past 17 here.

“Just the curse of the elephant,” Pineiro joked, referring to the A’s mascot. “No. I wish I knew what it was so I could turn it around.”

The Angels thought he had turned his season around a week ago. Pineiro’s most recent start had been his best in months – a seven-inning, one-run outing against the Twins on Sept. 4 that earned Pineiro his first victory since July 9.

But Monday’s start more closely resembled another July start – July 17 at the Oakland Coliseum when he retired just one of the nine A’s batters he faced, walking four and giving up a grand slam in a 9-1 loss. That start seemed to ignite a downward...
