Carpenter's Elbow Troubles Cards

Carpenter has lost nearly three full seasons to elbow and shoulder injuries since joining the Cardinals prior to the 2003 season, but he has remained healthy over the past two years. Including the postseason, only Roy Halladay, CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander have thrown more innings than Carpenter since the start of the 2010 season.

Carpenter credited a new training regimen for newfound shoulder strength this season. He started incorporating heavier weights into his routine last year and recently told the Sporting News that the difference in his arm strength is "night and day better."

He greatly reduced his bullpen sessions between starts in the second half and focused on lower-body strength and conditioning. The objective was to keep his arm as strong as possible for the long season.
