If you want someone to build a team that can win in October, you could not find many choices better than Jon Daniels. The Texas Rangers general manager has reached the World Series twice and he's only 34.
So what's his secret?
You build a team that can win from April through September and when it gets to October, you adjust accordingly. For the Rangers this year, that meant moving hard-throwing righthander Alexi Ogando to the bullpen.
"When you get to the playoffs, your weaknesses are exposed," Daniels said. "From 1 to 25, you need to have the strongest roster you can."
Because the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants are now home and starting pitchers were slammed in the League Championship Series, murmurs began before the World Series that building a team around starting pitching just might not be the way to go.
