Rangers' Pitchers Never Came Close

It ended not with a bang, nor the boom they had become accustomed to, but with a whimper.

And when it was over and their heartbreak complete, the Texas Rangers filed back into the clubhouse and thought about what might have been.

They have a lot of soul-searching to do.

The sequel, they say, is never as good as the one before, and Game 7 of the World Series reminded us of that Friday night with a resounding thud.

The exception of this Series, of course, was St. Louis' Chris Carpenter, the winning pitcher in the Cardinals' 6-2 victory.

Gifted with a chance from the heavens -- Wednesday's rainout -- to reprise his previous postseason performances, right-hander Carpenter proved to be the stabilizing force that this memorable and mercurial World Series finally needed.
