This is the first Saturday of the rest of Joe Paterno’s life. He has worked the sidelines for Penn State every Saturday in the fall since 1950. Now he is out as head coach, fired in the wake of a sex abuse scandal involving Jerry Sandusky, his former defensive coordinator.
Paterno’s life built around the structure of practice, games, bowls and recruiting, has been shattered. His retirement based on basking in the glow of a lifetime of accomplishments has been inexorably altered. Or has it? Can he show his face in this town again?
For now, Paterno, 84, remains largely out of the public eye. He won’t be on the sideline when Penn State plays Nebraska. He has hired a high-profile criminal defense lawyer. It could be months before his life returns to anything resembling normal.
