As he stepped away from the table in front of the large interview room and watched as his general manager and new field manager broke away to do a series of non-stop interviews, Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. looked and sounded a lot like a rather relieved man.
Mike Matheny was working the room, charming folks with his wit and personality, and every once in a while you could catch DeWitt casting a self-satisfied glance at the man he'd just hired to run his championship team. But DeWitt has been around long enough to know that the business of running a professional baseball team does not allow much time to savor moments like this. The time to enjoy the most significant move of his ownership has already passed. It's time for DeWitt to take a deep breath and start contemplating...
