Royal Melbourne Still Quite Challenging

THE world's best golfers believe Royal Melbourne will bare its teeth at the Presidents Cup despite fears technology has tamed the course.

While Geoff Ogilvy said it should be rated Australia's best course and on a similar level to Augusta and St Andrews, many commentators deemed it obsolete when Ernie Els routed it with a 60 en route to claiming the Heineken Classic in 2004, saying the modern game had made the course too easy to be considered a serious challenge.

Els was yesterday among those who stressed that a combination of predicted gale-force winds for Friday and firm greens would make Royal Melbourne a difficult test.
