Focus Rests on Beckham's Future

As much as the members of the L.A. Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo, and perhaps the league itself, might like to see the teams and stakes take center stage as Sunday’s MLS Cup final approaches, it made a lot of sense to let the spotlight fall on David Beckham on Thursday and get it all out of the way.

The 36-year-old’s expiring contract and uncertain future was the elephant in the room during a packed downtown news conference that, for the record, also featured Galaxy coach Bruce Arena, captain Landon Donovan and playoff hero Mike Magee.

The first question: Would the result of Sunday’s championship game (9 PM ET, ESPN/Galavision) have any influence on whether Beckham decided to re-sign with L.A., move back to Europe or retire?
