Jim Boeheim will forever be the defining face of basketball at Syracuse University. He shepherded the men’s program from a regional power to a national one, winning an N.C.A.A. title in 2003 and earning a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
And throughout Boeheim’s more than three decades at Syracuse, Bernie Fine served as the program’s backbone, the behind-the-scenes worker bee who took care of the details. With no significant basketball pedigree or résumé as a player, Fine, 65, steadily rose to become one of the most accomplished assistant coaches in college basketball.
