In 13 years of covering sports and 10 years at this paper, I’ve never been more impressed with a student-athlete’s handling of a pressure situation than Kenny Frease’s response yesterday. Frease spoke candidly about extending an olive branch to Yancy Gates, who sucker punched him in Saturday’s brawl.
The XU senior received seven stitches in various places around his left eye, which was still quite black and blue when he sat down in the Cintas Center media room.
Per the original story, Frease said he understood that people make mistakes in emotionally-charged situations. He thought it was immature to consider pressing criminal charges for something that happened in a highly competitive situation.
He also thought the gesture would help everyone move on.
