As he's advanced the past couple of weeks with his throwing program, Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright can no longer fight his nature.
He'll get to one of his last pitches of a workout and wait for his catcher to expect another fastball. That's when Wainwright will snap off a curveball, one that seems like a wild fastball sailing well over his companion's head until diving sharply and smartly into the strike zone.
"I still got it," Wainwright said.
The righthander isn't quite sure whether he's supposed to be throwing his breaking ball just yet this offseason. But he can't ignore the itch. Ten months is a long time to go without a familiar friend who is both reliable and wickedly effective.
Just ask the Cardinals.
