Joe Paterno, 85, worked in the Penn State football program for more than 60 years, the final 46 as head coach. His 409 coaching victories are the most in the history of college football’s top division, and he is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
On Nov. 9, Paterno was fired by Penn State, hours after he announced his intention to retire at the end of this past football season and days after his former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested and charged with 40 counts of sexual offenses involving eight boys over a 15-year period. On Nov. 18, Paterno’s son Jay revealed that his father had been diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer.
Paterno has not spoken publicly since his firing.
