Gonzaga is 17-3. Its losses all have been to quality opponents: Illinois and Saint Mary’s on the road, Michigan State at home. The Zags’ victims include Notre Dame, Xavier and Arizona. But they only just squeezed into the AP poll this week (No. 24), although the coaches who vote in the ESPN/USA Today poll still prefer Harvard.
It hasn’t been this difficult for Gonzaga to attract devotion at any point since they exploded onto the scene with their Elite Eight run in 1999 and followed it up with two more trips to the Sweet 16.
Few since built the program into a national brand. The Zags consistently challenge — and often vanquish — some of the biggest names in the game.
