Pamela Marsh-Williams, the associate dean for undergraduate advising at the University of Massachusetts, had never met Victor Cruz. But she had seen his academic record.
“And it was not good,” Marsh-Williams said.
Cruz, a second-year wide receiver on the football team, needed a C average to remain at the university. He was not close to that — in any recent semester. Cruz, then 20, was dismissed from the institution and his football scholarship was revoked.
