On a day when a pre-match handshake took on the form of a two-fingered salute, Manchester United reclaiming top spot of the Premier League courtesy of a Wayne Rooney double barely seemed to matter.
Rooney’s goals lifted United above Manchester City and defeated Liverpool, the biggest rival of them all. Yet the three points carried little significance following Luis Suárez’s latest addition to his list of shame.
