Tiger Woods scrambled to remain a contender at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Friday, but failed to make a dent in the five-stroke deficit with which he started the day.
In fact, he lost a shot. That was due primarily to a journeyman non-winner named Charlie Wi, a 40-year-old former Cal standout who backed up the 9-under 61 he shot at Monterey Peninsula Country Club Thursday with a 3-under 69 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Wi had a three-shot lead at the halfway point over first-round co-leader Dustin Johnson and his advantage could have been a lot bigger. Wi had a rollercoaster round that included an eagle, five birdies and four bogeys under weather conditions that rapidly deteriorated over the course of the day.
