David Ortiz and the Red Sox [team stats] swerved away from an awkward and likely damaging arbitration hearing with both sides agreeing yesterday on a historic annual salary of $14.575 million for the designated hitter.
The settlement was reached hours before their afternoon appointment in a St. Petersburg, Fla., hotel. In a conference room, the avuncular yet sensitive Ortiz would have had to listen to the Red Sox argue why the 36-year-old was undeserving of a salary worth a penny more than they were offering.
