Wakefield Truly One of a Kind

Usually the phrase “once in a lifetime” describes an athlete of breathtaking ability, whether it’s Larry Bird, Bobby Orr or Ted Williams.

But it applies to others as well, athletes whose skills may not have been transcendent, but who were nonetheless unique.

Yesterday, we said farewell to one of them.

Tim Wakefield hung up his spikes after 19 years in the big leagues, the final 17 with the Red Sox [team stats]. The knuckleballer who only turned to the pitch because his career as a first baseman was dying in Double A, announced his retirement with a couple dozen current and former teammates on hand, including Derek Lowe.
