Burnett Was a $69.5 Million Flop in Pinstripes

There’s a good reason why major ­leaguers don’t appear on the Hall of Fame ballot until five years after their re­tirement: Time allows for context; it (usu­ally) makes voters smarter. But there’s no need to hold off on calling A.J. Burnett a Yankee failure – not unless you think win­ning Game 2 of the 2009 World Series was worth nearly $70 mil­lion.

Don’t laugh; there are enough people who believe the Yankees would’ve been cooked had Burnett not beaten the Phillies, 3-1. Re­member, Cliff Lee had just dominated CC Sabathia in Game 1, which meant that all that separated the NL champs from taking a 2-0 Series lead back to Cit­izens Bank Park was Burnett.
