Should Mets Retire Carter's Number?

The passing of Gary Carter last week elicited warm memories from his teammates, including Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and Wally Backman. The praise was genuine and deserved. Carter played with gusto, joy and often in pain. He loved the game and cheered on his teammates. He wore his faith on his sleeve but did not proselytize like today’s generation of players.

The Mets have declined to retire Carter’s number. He was, after all, only on the Mets for five years, and the fifth season was injury-plagued. He does not hold any team hitting records. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame, but he went in as a Montreal Expo.
