Fourteen days after contractually locking up Matt Cain through 2017, the Giants handed another young starting pitcher, Madison Bumgarner, a five-year extension through 2017.
It’s the commitment that keeps on giving.
Bumgarner is guaranteed $35 million over the five years — $40 million if he becomes eligible for arbitration after this season, which doesn’t appear likely. He’d have to qualify as a Super 2 (meaning two-plus years of service time), but he could fall short.
Either way, it’s a lot of coin for a 22-year-old kid.
