End of 49ers in San Francisco Near

With red and gold confetti scattering in a Candlestick Lite wind and U2's "Beautiful Day" playing over loudspeakers, the 49ers' groundbreaking ceremony for their stadium in Santa Clara came to a close Thursday evening.

As an invitation-only crowd watched shovels dig into the dirt, the festivities easily could have been interpreted as a wake for the team's ties to San Francisco. Team CEO Jed York tried to dispel that perception.
