Can Safety, Violence Co-Exist in NFL?

The recent suicide of Junior Seau has shifted the focus of the NFL offseason, from the draft, trades and minicamps to matters far more serious.

Facing lawsuits from more than 1,500 of its former players, who claim the league hid the dangers of concussions from them, the NFL must continue to consider further steps to increase player safety. The NFL has never been more popular. However, how the league deals with head trauma and its effect on past, present and future players, is a story line that is not going away.

"The issue of head trauma is a sustainability threat to the league," said Robert Boland, a professor of sports management and the academic chair for New York University's Tisch Center. "It's not just the league's problem, but the NFLPA's problem as well....
