Soph Smith Named Kentucky QB

It took him 17 days and 18 preseason practices to make it official, but University of Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips named his starting quarterback Monday. Barring injury between now and then, sophomore Maxwell Smith will lead the Wildcats’ offense in their Sept. 2 opener at Louisville. Senior Morgan Newton will be his backup.“They’ve both done a great job of preparing and competing,” Phillips said. “This is one of the tougher decisions I’ve had to make. We have two quarterbacks we feel like we can win with, (but) Max Smith gives us the best chance to win at this point.”
