Stanford did everything it could to try and land the star linebacker from Hawaii. The five-star recruit even used an official visit to the school.
With a different answer to his prayers, Manti Te'o could be carving out his Heisman campaign as a Stanford Cardinal. Instead, he's leading the Irish to an undefeated record as a senior.
"I really enjoyed Stanford," Te'o said. "I was really close to coach (Jim) Harbaugh and coach Andy Buh, who was the linebacker coach at that time. It was a really, really fun visit for me to be there and to be on the West Coast and near a lot of family.
"But, you know, everybody feels a certain way. I prayed about it, and that led me here to Notre Dame. That's not saying anything about Stanford, because Stanford is a great school. But I prayed about it and everything pointed to Notre Dame."
Te'o is just one of many high school student-athletes that have had both schools as possible options. Since 2008, 33 recruits that signed with Notre Dame chose the Irish over a Stanford offer. Fourteen have done the opposite in that same time span.
