The Rotten Luck of the Irish


Notre Dame is in the midst of a magical season, sporting a 9-0 record for the first time in nearly two decades with three games to go.

But the Fighting Irish also are heading toward another less enviable designation: the unluckiest team in the history of college football.

Thanks to underachieving opponents, a lame-duck method of picking title-game teams and its own beloved individualism, there is a growing chance that Notre Dame will win the rest of its games but still fail to reach its first Bowl Championship Series national-title game. Alabama, Kansas State and Oregon all are 9-0 and ranked above the Irish.
