After two days of talks with officials from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service failed to bring NHL owners and players closer to a deal to end the 75-day-old lockout, Commissioner Gary Bettman has suggested an owner-player-only meeting as the next step.
NHL officials are waiting for the NHL Players Association's response to that suggestion.
"After spending several hours with both sides over two days, the presiding mediators concluded that the parties remained far apart, and that no progress toward a resolution could be made through further mediation at this point in time,"said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. "We are disappointed that the mediation process was not successful."
