CAP CANA, Dominican Republic — A year ago, in his first official act as Red Sox [team stats] manager, Bobby Valentine made a surprise appearance at David Ortiz [stats]’ celebrity golf fund-raiser as a demonstration of how much he valued the slugger, then a free agent.


Let’s just say Valentine wasn’t invited back.


Ortiz’ annual charity event, now in its fifth year of raising money for children who need medical care, is perhaps the best reminder of how much the Red Sox have gone through in the past 12 months.
