Nine months ago, C.J. McCollum sounded as sincere as could be when he wrote a column for Sporting News stating that he believed returning to Lehigh University to play his senior season was the smartest possible move.
“My family and I believe another year in college will be more beneficial for me on and off court,’’ he said last April.
Genuine as that seemed, it doesn’t sound like the right decision today.
Not with his college career now in serious jeopardy after breaking the fifth metatarsal in his left foot Saturday. Not with a year of his finite basketball life spent a level below where he could have been … without the compensation he could have earned … with his stock in danger of slipping in the next draft … and with that college degree he and his parents covet a possibility any time, whether he gets it while playing at Lehigh or afterward.
