Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander had just finished signing his scorecard Thursday at Pebble Beach when he heard the stunning news.
Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners agreed on a seven-year, $175 million contract, the richest deal for a pitcher, according to a person familiar with the contract but unauthorized to speak publicly until the deal was finalized.
"Holy cow!" Verlander told USA TODAY Sports. "I didn't know that. You miss a lot being out on the golf course."
And just like that, while playing as an amateur in the AT&T National Pro-Am, Verlander, the 2011 American League Cy Young winner, got a whole lot richer.
