Let’s take Rory McIlroy at his word, for now.

Let’s believe him, for now, when he insists that his lousy start to this year’s professional golf season — a missed cut in Abu Dhabi and a loss in the first round of last week’s match-play event in the Arizona desert — is a matter of swing errors, not an equipment change.

Let’s give him the benefit of every doubt on the matter, for now, because it really is a small sample size when it comes to studying his playing performance after making the switch from Titleist to Nike.

“I’m only two tournaments into the season; I’ve still got 20 to go,” McIlroy said Tuesday morning at PGA National where on Thursday he’ll begin defense of the Honda Classic title he won on the Champion course a year ago.
